Tendonitis

I went to "Bread and Butter Society" in Exeter today. However on the drive there I noticed that I had a lot of pain in my hand, specifically from the knuckle of my thumb up to my wrist. By the time I arrived I couldn't carry anything with that hand - and of course it is my right hand. Even though I couldn't sew or cut anything I stayed and enjoyed the conversation.
Linda gave me ice for it and I tried Advil all to no avail. I couldn't hold my rotary cutter. This isn't good since I need to use that hand for everything. I decided to go to the Doctor and she looked at it and examined my hand and decided I had tendinitis in my thumb area. She advised me to ice it and wear my splint. No - I don't like that advice since I can't do anything with my splint on (yes I know that is the idea).
I have quilts that need quilted (well only 3 right now) but I was hoping to get some of my own quilts quilted on the frame.
Well enough complaining - I will do as the doctor suggested until Monday and then hopefully it will all be fine and if it isn't then I guess I will go back to the doctor.

It is amazing how quickly the weeks go by. I have taken advantage of many opportunities to upgrade my longarm quilting skills. It has been fun to be with so many great teachers and learn more about this wonderful art.
I made an unplanned trip to Ottawa to be with my son during and after his knee surgery. I took the train to Ottawa and it was a wonderful way to travel. I spent the time visiting with old friends and watching shows with my son.
Hexagons are my latest endeavour in quilting. I used a creative memories hexagon punch to make hexies from freezer paper.

I ironed them onto different scrap fabrics.

Cut apart ready for edges to be glued down.

Fall is definitely here

With the coming of fall, we get back into routines. For me, it is guild meetings (I belong to 3), UFO classes (to finish projects) and we take our granddaughter to a gym program once a week. Our grandson goes to swimming lessons once a week. It is fun to see them progress through these lessons.

Life has certainly been busy since we came home from Las Vegas. It was a great trip and after seeing the Grand Canyon we realized that we need to spend more time there. It was awesome. If you want to see the pictures we took while we were there, click here.

I have been busy quilting for customers, going to guild meetings, taking classes. My biggest news is that I have bought the brand new Pfaff Creative Sensation. I love it – it sews like a dream and over the next couple of weeks I will start embroidering with it. I purchased a BOM from Hoopsisters and I am all ready to go. Over the next week I will be learning more about my new machine and playing with all of its new features.

I attended Quilting with Machines in Huron, Ohio. I took all Statler related classes and I learned so much. Again it takes time to put into practice what I learned there. I met up with a lady I had taken classes with in Zanesville. It was good to see her again.

I purchased a lot of kits over the last few weeks and so I foresee a busy fall/winter working on them.

THE NEXT 3 DAYS

Monday

Wewent to the Flamingo Hotel to see the wildlife habitat outside the hotel. Walkingon the path through the wildlife habitat we saw flamingos, ducks, koi andturtles. There were also waterfalls and streams flowing through this area. After that we went to Caesar’s Palace and sawAtlantis. This was an awesome show that had animatronic characters appear frombelow the water to recount the myth of Atlantis.

Afterdinner , we went to MGM to see the lions. However, we were there during naptime so all we could do was watch them. There is a 4 floor store dedicated to M& M’s. They had aninteresting 3D movie playing. I bought M& M pj bottoms. How cool is that!

Wetook a tram down to Mandalay Bay Hotel. We walked from there to the Luxor Hotelthat is in the shape of a pyramid. We walked from there back to our hotel forthe night. Another day of lots of walking!!!

Tuesday in Las Vegas

Wewent to a timeshare presentation and of course we turned down their offer. Wereceived a $50 Visa gift card for our trouble. That was good!!

We hadlunch and then we were off to see Red Rock Canyon. It was awesome to see thered coloured rocks (they are sandstone rocks that get their colour from ironoxide – over centuries the iron oxide has built up and this produces thecrimson colour that is in the canyon today). It was interesting to see the cliffs up close.There is a scenic 13 mile loop that we drove. Here is a quote from the website:

The mountains in the Red Rockarea were formed by a number of geological forces including fractured faultswhere the earth's crust collided over millions of years and fossilized sanddunes. Some cliffs reach up an astounding 3,000 feet.

After all this walking I decided I needed running shoes since mysandals weren’t all that comfortable after many hours of walking.

We went to two quilt shops. The first one was OK but the second onehad lots of enticing things to buy. Ibought a few things there.

Wednesday

We were up early today (6:20 am) to get ready for our bus that waspicking us up at 7:05 to take us to the Grand Canyon. We stopped at the HooverDam to take pictures. From there we wereoff to the Grand Canyon. Wow I havenever seen anything so awesome. Themagnitude of the whole canyon is what is awesome. They have free trams thattake you from one viewing area to another. At each area the scenery has changedand it is just beautiful. We arrivedback at the hotel at 9p.m.

LAS VEGAS - WE HAVE ARRIVED

Our first full day in Las Vegas. Our hotel had a meet and greet this morning - they had a draw for $50 and we won!!!! We had lunch at Subway and then we drove to a huge Bass Pro Shop with a lot of dioramas of rock climbing, African scenes and elk. It was part of the Silverton hotel and casino. They had a huge aquarium with 4000 tropical fish and stingrays. We watched the diver feed the stingrays - one of them had a 2 foot span. After that they had a mermaid swimming with the fish. Very interesting.
Tonight we went for a walk on the las vegas strip. We saw a 1/2 size replica of the Eiffel Tower. There are so many hotels /casinos to see. We walked to the Flamingo Hotel to receive free tickets to a comedy show. At the front of the Bellagio hotel there was a water show with music and lights. I took photos and I will post them when we return home. The sidewalks are packed with people. More to come tomorrow.

The table topper was made by me using the twister template. It measures 18" x 18". The tart melts (fragrance is Sweet Cinnamon Apples) and orange clove fixins are from my friend Janet's shop. I have the tart melts in my potpourri pot and my house smells wonderful.

Retreat at Primitive Gatherings

Wow – I just returned from a retreat at Primitive Gatherings in Menasha, Wisconsin. Eight of us from Quilts and Calicos booked a retreat at Primitive Gatherings in Menasha, Wisconsin. My good friend, Helen and I drove together and we planned on taking two days to get there. We arrived around 5 on Thursday the 17th of August.

On Wednesday August the 17^th, we left Ontario and our first stop was at Mary Maxim in Port Huron for their tent sale. Both of us picked up sock yarn at $2.97 a ball – a really good deal! We left there and headed west to The Hen House in Charlotte, Michigan (www.thehenhousemi.com). This shop specializes in everything primitive.

After that we drove to Accomplish Quilting in Stevensville, Michigan and dropped off my Gammill for servicing.

The next day we stopped at two more quilt shops on the way to Menasha.

Primitive Gatherings is an awesome shop – when we first walked in it felt a little overwhelming seeing all of the fabrics and samples they have in the shop. They specialize in their own hand dyed wool, reproduction fabrics and homespuns. They have lots of kits and inspiring samples to browse through. There was so much to see in the shop that in order to take it all in we actually made 4 separate trips to the shop and ended up leaving lots of cash behind. Here are some of the kits and books that I purchased. I am looking forward to working on them over the winter.

We stayed in the retreat house called “The Gathering”. It is beautifully decorated with primitive style quilts, wall hangings and bits and pieces around the place. There are 2 separate bright classrooms in which to sew. Each of the upstairs bedrooms accommodates between 2 and 4 ladies. We had our own twin bed. Each room is also decorated beautifully and each bed has a different quilt on it. Check out pictures at The Gathering here:

The meals were delicious and they were all cooked by Lisa’s mum, Terri.

It is truly an inspiring place to go and get some quilting done.

KITCHEN RENOVATION

When we moved into this house over 11 years ago, I thought to myself that I would have to get the kitchen painted because it was a peach colour that I didn't like and the cupboards were beige melamine.

Well Stan painted it while I was in Kelowna and that made it look better.


This is a before picture with the doors off the new doors ready to be installed and the workers tools ready to be used.

The doors are all installed and the kitchen is gorgeous.

Just last week we had our new cupboard doors installed and wow what a difference this makes to the kitchen.

MOTIVATION

We have all heard quilters say "I don't feel motivated to do anything". I have been there too. Since June 20th (which was the beginning of my vacation in Kelowna) until a few days ago, I have not felt like doing any sewing or quilting. The sewing part is OK but the quilting needs to be done. I really do enjoy the quilting (long arm quilting) part of my life but I wasn't motivated to go upstairs and put a quilt on the frame and then decide which pattern to quilt on it.

However, one day last week I went upstairs and put a quilt on the frame and decided on the pattern and set it off quilting. While the machine was doing that, I decided to work on a dresden plate quilt that needed to be put together. This quilt is for Tom and Cheryl (my husband's aunt and uncle) (the dresden plate part of it was hand stitched by her mother and then hand appliqued to the blocks). I have it together and today we are heading for their 40th anniversary celebration. It still needs an outer border but I need the OK from her to do that.

After doing that, I went to a potluck dinner in Exeter. While I was there, I worked on a BOM that was on display at Quilts and Calicos last year. Now that I see it growing each time I finish another part I am now motivated to finish it.

Another motivator is having friends who keep you accountable (in a fun way). Each month, Carleen, Helen and I post our monthly objectives. It is a good way to stay motivated to finish or at least work on some projects (yes UFO's too) that have been hanging around quite a while. Why not try something like this with your friends that will help you stay motivated too.

On that note, I wish you the best in getting and staying motivated.

KELOWNA

I flew to Kelowna from London on June 20. I was there visiting a good friend – Bonnie. She met me at the airport on the 20^th and then we went to lunch at my favourite restaurant called DeDutch. They have the best Pannekoeken (genuine Dutch pancake, tasting similar to the traditional North American pancake and is slightly thicker than a crepe). I had mine with strawberries and chocolate. MMMMM very good.

The next day we met with another friend (M) and the three of us went to a jewellery store where the sell Pandora bracelets. I had been admiring them for some time so I bought my bracelet and one bead.

There is another store that sells Chamilia beads (much like Pandora) and I bought a few beads there as well as earrings and a necklace. The next few days were spent visiting and stitching. We went to a new quilt shop in West Bank and I was able to buy a jelly roll for $29 – what a good deal!

I have had an Ipod Touch for over a year and I didn’t know how to work it. While I was there, M set my Ipod up and I was able to surf the web, load it with music and games. I am hooked on playing Solitaire on it.

I went to Bonnie’s nail lady and had gel nails put on – I love them. The next week and a half we spent stitching, chatting and watching movies and we spent some time in the hot tub. I had a great time and it was very relaxing. I came home on July 6^th.

Rhubarb Muffins and Scones

I have just made and tasted the most wonderful muffins and scones. They are so yummy. My friend Janet at http://oldecrowprimitives-janet.blogspot.com/2011/06/tis-season.html has the recipe for both on her blog.
It is a great time of year with the rhubarb coming into season and now the strawberries are ready. Summer is definitely here. We have had a few really hot days but now we are on a cool cycle - don't know how long this is to last. I don't like the really hot days but I do like the sun to shine.

Statler Days - Zanesville, Ohio

I have arrived in Zanesville, Ohio to attend Statler Days. I am looking forward to these 3 days of dedicated classes on my Statler and Creative Studio 4. It is going to be very exciting. The drive here was rainy the whole way. I was nervous about driving here by myself but now that I am here I am feeling better. I had supper at Denny's but it is so cool there; it is made to look like a diner from the 1950's.
Tomorrow night's dinner is with Paul and Mildred Statler - that should be very interesting. It is good to put faces to names that we hear all of the time.
I am going to relax for the rest of the evening so that I am ready for tomorrow's classes.

SPIRAL BARGELLO TABLE RUNNER

I really like country colours and those are what I chose for my tablerunner. I took this as a class from Carol at the Sarnia Quilters Guild. Every table runner was different depending on whether you put the lights on the inside or outside and the colours you chose.

Last week while I was at Walmart I found this cool yarn - it is really fluffy - so of course I bought two huge balls and created a poncho for A and a blanket for her dolly. She really likes the blanket - it is very soft and fluffy.

Bernat Crochet Along - finished afghan

Christmas is over and projects are getting finished. I have finished the Bernat mystery. It was fun to do and to see how it all goes together. The colours aren't my favourite. There are some changes I would make if I were to do it again but like everyone else I have so many projects going on in my mind that it will be a long time before I attempt it again.

I went to the Oxford Guild last Thursday and we had a trunk show from Babs 'n Jas. It was great and so motivating. After the guild, I went to the new Len's Mills store in Woodstock. Wow, it is wonderful. Aisles are free of clutter and the fabric is so organized and the prices were good on most of the cottons. I am collecting blues, creams and taupes for a future scrap quilt from Bonnie Hunter. So I bought 3 m total of those colours. I bought 4 m of a white tone on tone - they are always hard to find. My biggest purchase was 1.5 m of 3 different flannels to make a chenille baby quilt - my first one. I am so intrigued with them I had to try it out.

Today I am off to the Marsh Store. I need some fabric for a BOM I am doing with Sarnia guild. I am also participating in a round robin and so I will need some white with black fabric as well.

Also on tap for today, mount a baby quilt and quilt it. I have 4 months worth of BOM cut out ready to sew together for Sarnia Guild.

Bernat Crochet Along Mystery

A couple of months ago Bernat sponsored a crochet along mystery. My daughter and I decided to do this together. We were given the required amount of yarn and colours to buy. We downloaded clues

once a week for about 6 weeks. After following the clues this is what I ended up with.

After sewing some of the units together, I am now ready to sew them into strips and eventually an afghan top.

Following the instructions some more and I now have an afghan almost completed.

Just 2 more rounds to go and it is finished!!!

Our Family Christmas

Tomorrow we are having our family Christmas. Our son arrived on Monday from Kanata. Our daughter and husband and 4 kids will come over for dinner tomorrow. Two of our grandkids will already be here since we are having them for most of the day.

Now that I have finished making their gifts, we can wrap them so that tomorrow they are ready to be opened.

I still have a quilt to be quilted for M and that will be done before Sunday - yes another Christmas celebration where we will open gifts, this time in Toronto.

I finished my last customer quilt for this year today and delivered it to her today. It is very cute - appliqued elephants in blocks.

I am going to post my pictures of quilts that I have completed on Picasa - I will post the link at a later date.

The snow warnings were issued and we just waited to see how much snow would fall. Who knew we would get this much snow at one time!! We stayed inside and just watched it fall and fall!! Then the winds picked up and we had blizzard conditions. Here are some pictures of the snowfall on the first day.

This was the second time shovelling and the shovel shows how much snow fell on the first day.

Note the snow blower in the background - it is our neighbour's and since the snow closer to the driveway was heavy the snowblower quit working. So it was back to shovelling.

We have snow

I especially like this season because of the snow. It is so beautiful to look outside and see everything covered in a coat of white. Everything looks so clean. Christmas will be here before we know it.

Today I had a good friend over and we shopped, ate and visited and also did some sewing. I finished my Christmas Lights mystery (a Quiltville mystery published in Quiltmaker last year). Helen will put the binding on for me. She has finished her Christmas Lights quilt as well and so has another friend of ours. We will be showcasing them at the Sarnia Guild on Monday night. The President of the guild issued a challenge in September that every month we are to bring in another completed project. So far the three of us have done that.

I have found a new blog (to me) – it is called The Great Hexagon Quilt-Along. In the new year, I want to start a hexagon quilt that will be hand pieced and this way I can keep it with me and work on it as I spend time waiting for appts or whatever. It seems we spend so much time just waiting these days that I thought this would work well for me.

The other thing I have made a commitment to do – I will only buy fabric in order to finish already started projects. I need to do this in order to save $$$ and decrease UFO’s. Helen also agreed to do this so hopefully the two uf us can monitor each other (should make for an interesting year).

Shop Hop in Michigan

The Sarnia Guild planned a bus trip to Michigan so that we could participate in a shop hop of quilt shops in Michigan. We left early (I was up at 4:30 a.m.) in the morning and headed to our first shop. It was located in an old building from the 1800's. Each shop was unique and we were given a different Christmas cookie cutter at each one as well as a recipe for cookies and a pattern to make a small project. By the end of the day we were all weary and ready to head home for some rest and relaxation and also to check out our purchases and make plans for the fabric that we had purchased.
There are a couple of shops that we will definitely have to check out again.

Back in Canada

Well I am back home in London, ON. We went to a beautiful wedding ceremony on Saturday. It was a blustery cold and rainy day for an outdoor wedding but we were in a gazebo so that kept the rain off. The little flower girls were just gorgeous.
After being in Scotland for 2 weeks, I came home with a new appreciation of what we have in this country. In the part of Scotland I was in, it was hard to find craft stores. There aren't any stores selling quilt fabrics (well there might be in the larger cities) or other craft items that are big in North America.
Four of us took the train to Edinburgh - it seemed like there were people everywhere. Edinburgh is a city full of history - we saw the castle - what an impressive site that was. The other interesting thing about being there was the thrift shops. There was one street with over 10 of them almost in a row. They all have unique second hand items. On the way back we stopped in Glasgow for a couple of hours and did lots more walking and shopping. We got back extremely exhausted and ready to relax.My trip home was quite uneventful other than being in London Heathrow airport. Wow that is a confusing place to be - there were people all over the place - it must be one of the busiest airports in the world.
Now it is time to get back to reality - we are painting the main floor of our house in order to get it ready to sell. Stan has done most of the trim on the main floor. The week of Nov 1st we will empty out the laundry room (on the main floor) and get it painted. The hallway will be next. We are going to paint everything a neutral colour to make it easier to sell the house. We will be relocating to somewhere outside of London.
Tomorrow I will be back to quilting and I am really looking forward to that. I am going to a quilt retreat starting on Wednesday and I don't come home until Sunday. I have to get projects ready to take with me - it will be a brilliant time! (Brilliant is the new word I learned while in Scotland - it means the same as saying 'awesome' or 'cool'.)

Scotland

I am in Scotland vacationing and visiting friends and relatives. The weather here has been gorgeous - nice sunny days although the evenings are quite cool. I am here with my sister and we are having a really good time.

We have checked out many little shops in different little towns around here. We have been to Burns house and monument, Barony A Frame (my Dad worked down the Barony pit), and we have seen some marvelous scenery as well. We drove to Catrine (where we stayed before emigrating to Canada) and went to church there on Sunday and after church caught up with some more relatives. We also toured around Catrine and remembered where the old places used to be.

We are staying with our cousin Anne and her husband in Penkill Castle, Old Dailly. Today we are waiting for Anne to come home and we are going to drive into Girvan - cute little wool shop there.

Tomorrow we are off to our Aunt and Uncle's house in Ochiltree. Once we get there we will be meeting some cousins that we haven't seen in a long time. It will be good to see them after such a long time.

Of course on our way to Ochiltree we will check out some more shops.

Fall is here

I love fall. I love the colours of the trees and the cooler days. It is so nice to have the windows open and listen to the birds and watch them as they come to drink from our fountain.
Last May, we had a hail storm go through London. It damaged our pool liner and the siding at the back of the house. This past week we have watched as the guys have installed our new liner (a gorgeous dark blue - really makes the water look nice). We are waiting for the siding guys still to come.
I am leaving on Sunday for a 2 week trip to Scotland. I am really looking forward to this. I will be meeting up with my sister at the Glasgow airport. We are both so cheap that the car we have is a standard. What Fun!! We not only have to remember which side of the road to drive on but also how to shift with the order hand.
We are going to meet up with relatives and some friends that my sister remembers from many years ago. I get to learn all about my past history before we left Scotland.
I have been tying up some loose ends here. One more quilt to finish before I leave.
I have decided to make my aunt and my cousin a Canadian table runner to thank them for allowing us to stay with them. I really do like to leave things to the last minute (lol).
